General data : Callejon de Huaylas
A trip to the Callejón de Huaylas makes a rewarding two or three day excursion from Lima. A long valley lying between the "Cordillera Negra" and "Cordillera Blanca", the area has been nicknamed the "Peruvian Switzerland" for its glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks that tower over 6000 m.a.s.l. (including Huascaran, at 6768 m.a.s.l., Perú’s highest mountain). The region is a favorite for campers, hikers, and mountain climbers from all over the world.
Huaraz is the capital of the department of Ancash, and the jumping point for most trips through the valley. The climate is dry in the lower zones and cold at high altitudes.
In the Callejón de Huaylas and Huascarán National Park you can do mountain climbing, trekking, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, hiking, rafting and many other activities. |
