This ancestral city of colonial homes and bucolic gardens of orchids and white lilies, is the historic and political capital of the Department of Amazonas. It has a mild climate and is situated at 2,236 meters above sea level.

Kuelap, located 72 Km (3 and a half hours) from the city of Chachapoyas in the district of Tingo, province of Luya, this citedel fortress is considered one of the most impressive architectural constructions of the Americas. Situated on a mountain summit 3,000 m.a.s.l. and consisting of 2 huge superimposed platforms on which rested the citadel. it was once an urban, political and military center of the Chachapoyas surrounded by huge walls measuring up to 20 meters in height and 584 meters in length.
Inside 420 homes built on a circular format each with conic shaped straw thatched roofs and richly decorated with geometrical motifs on limestone.
Luya is noted its burial crypts decorated with mural paintings and carved into the sacred cliffs of the Ravash. The museum of Leymebamba contain more than 150 mummies (funeral bundles) found in the mausoleums of the condor lagoon (laguna de los condores), nearby es the Congona, considered one of the most artistic archaeological sites due to the diversity and fine quality of its mural paintings.

La Jalca: Considered the folkloric capital of the Department, this district is 3 hours from Chachapoyas and has a colonial church dating back to the 17th century and traditional homes with straw thatched roofs. Nearby are the pre-inca remains of Ollape and the Mamacona Lagoon.
