Lambayeque

Capital: Chiclayo

General data :
The Lord of Sipan

Chiclayo, located 770 km north of Lima, is a burgeoning commercial center and capital of the department of Lambayeque. The area is known for its religious festivals, especially the Cruz de Chalpón, celebrated twice a year in Motupe and visited by thousands of pilgrims.

Famous too are the region’s crafts –weavings and ceramics- still made in the traditional manner in Eten, Monsefú, Morrope and Olmos. Lambayeque is also important archeologically; hundreds of archeological sites are located around the five valleys –Jequetepeque, Zaña, Lambayeque, La Leche an Motupe. These valleys once were part of the Lambayeque cultural heartland. Some of the more important sites are: Sipán and Chogayape in the Lambayeque valley, Apurlec in the Motupe valley, Batán Grande and Túcume in La Leche valley, Patapo, Pacatnamu at the mouth of the Jequetepeque river, and Huaca Rajada where the tomb of the Lord of Sipán was found along with fine pieces of gold, silver and semi-precious stones. Many of these can be viewed at the Bruning Museum in the town of Lambayeque.
